The concept of community can be a subjective issue. For some a community can simply refer to the geographical location in which one lives. For others community holds a much deeper and more personal meaning. It is a feeling of belonging with the people around you, of thinking that you made the right choices concerning friends. Belonging to a community, however, is not always a healthy choice, depending on the one chosen. Some communities are based on unhealthy ideas or aspects. This is true of Sal Paradise's community of friends in On The Road. Community in On The Road is developed and held together through the use of drugs and alcohol.
In the first chapter of On The Road Sal Paradise, who is the narrator throughout the book, is living in New Jersey at the home of his aunt. Sal's family seems to be either small or not very close to each other...
