Analysis: "The Broken Heart" by: John Donne
As shown in the poem "The Broken Heart" by John Donne, love is a complicated emotion, it can hurt as well as it can heal. In this poem, the author paints a clear picture on his attitude towards love. At first, the author is defending love, he then describes the way love ruins and overcomes you, finally, he describes how love is everlasting and it never really goes away.
At the beginning of this poem, the author is defending love. For example, in the very first stanza (lines 1-8), it says, "He is stark mad, who ever says, That he hath been in love an hour, Yet not that love so soon decays, But that in can in ten less space devour." "Yet not that love soon decays", is saying that you can't just forget a loved one in an hour. Love is too powerful and it leaves such a long-lasting impression on people that it would be impossible to forget about it in an hour. This stanza is showing is respect and a somewhat positive attitude towards love, he is obviously defending love in the first stanza by chastising anyone who thinks that a love can be forgotten in an hour.
