When a person commits a crime and is caught by the attorities, the government has the right to punish the criminal. Some criminals spend their time in jail working at the jail or sitting in the jail cell all day. Before the 1960s it was common for the jailers to beat the prisoners. That has changed now. People who are in prison today have to give up many of their rights. Yet they are still allowed certain liberties such as: freedom of religion, medical treatment, and right to libraries. In the past couple of years the number of inmates has increased dramtically. Jail crowding is a major problem now here in America.
