1. The main premises of this book include the notion that society as we know it today is exactly what is destroying life on this planet. The most important premise of the story talks about how modern man has single handedly found a way to stop the evolutionary process. Man has done this by pulling himself out of the competitive world of life. By doing this he has eliminated the process of natural selection by preserving and multiplying his population. It was learned in the story that when man attempts to feed the starving there is a paradoxical effect, because the population grows there are only more people that become starving. Because of this man has used up most of the planet's natural resources at an exponential rate, only to result in the ultimate extinction of man, and most other species. The name given to modern human culture over the last ten thousand years that yields all of these negative externalities in Mother Culture. Through out the story, Ishmael asks what does Mother Culture say? Mother Culture is the ambient voice that gives an explanation of how things came to be the way they are...
