Net Work Security
“A Field on the Rise”
By Christopher S. Harris
Network security is a very broad topic. ... With the need for new and updated networks comes the need for network security. In outlining the need for security, I find it very important to consider the factors involved with this field. Throughout this essay I will explain exactly what a network is and how they are used in society. ...
What is a network? ... A network is a group of equipment and transmission lines that are used by users located at a specific location to transfer information. ... A wide area network (WAN) is a network that consists of a number of clients and servers and generally covers a broad area such as a city, state, region, or a country. ... One example of a commonly used network is that of the telephone network. This is the largest and the oldest network in the United States. ... Telephones, electronic signals, wires, and switching devices are what make up this network. Since it is one of the oldest networks and was once considered a monopoly, this network is very standardized. This is just one example of a network. Today, virtually every aspect of our daily life depends on a working network of hundreds of thousands of computers. That network helps operate our water and electric distribution systems, our communications links, our transportation systems, and many business information systems. ...
Now that I have established what a network is and how it is used to send and receive data or information, I will examine network security from a different perspective. ... Real hackers mostly think crackers are lazy, irresponsible, and not very bright, and object that being able to break security doesnt make you a hacker any more than being able to hotwire cars makes you an automotive specialist. ... As a result, they are known only to the security community for the programs they write and the exploits they have uncovered. ... In fact, some are actively involved in developing technologies that can be used to improve overall network security, such as hackers from the ISS X-force, the Bind view Razor Team, and the AXENT SWAT team. Coders can work independently or through a network of hacking teams that run exploits from a variety of locations, making it difficult to trace the activities back to their source. ... They generally have less depth of knowledge but possibly greater network skill than Coders. This level of hacker would be part of a security team in a large organization. ... A majority of security consultants fall into this group. ... Admins like to play with new tools as soon as they come out and are often part-time developers for freeware and open-source security tools. They are also known as regular contributors to security mailing lists or post news articles online. ... They run the code they find on the Internet on their office, home, or school network. Script kiddies are generally recipitants of security mailing lists, though they may not be regular contributors, and are often vocal in hacker IRC channels. ... Curiosity about how the tools work and what information might be obtained leads to an unauthorized security breech. Having an understanding of the perpetrators is a key part of network security.
