Summary and Response: "The Teacher Who Changed My Life"
Nicolas Gage, a war refugee from Greece, writes a moving story of his struggle through life in America and one woman's remarkable impact on his life. Not only does he illustrate how a little kindness and compassion from a teacher changed his life, but he also shows how even tragic events in a person's life can be used in a positive way . Both of these points revealed by Gage in his essay, "The Teacher Who Changed My Life", are ideas that I not only agree with, but because of my life experiences also feel strongly about.
In Gage's essay, which is an excerpt from his book, A Place for Us, he tells a story of his family coming to America. His mother is imprisoned and eventually killed by the Communists because she had sent four of her children to America. Gage arrives in America at age nine, and is thrown into the American way of life. With a father he doesn't know, and a world that is just as new, Gage bravely goes into the unknown. After moving several times over the course of several years, Gage finds himself at Chandler Junior High. This is where he meets his soon-to-be "mentor and muse", Miss Marjorie Hurd, the Newspaper Club advisor. Miss Hurd is a teacher who doesn't put up with "layabouts" ...
