Through different stories, people stress and believe that there is a connection between oneself and a greater power, such as God or Nature. For example, in the selection "Of Plymouth Plantation," Squanto and the Pilgrims believe in a higher power. Squanto and the Pilgrims both believed in God which is a higher power than all of us, although they life and nature differently.
Squanto and the Pilgrims cared for everything, the quote "That neither he nor any of his should injure or do hurt to any of their people," let's people know that they both don't like cruelty unless needed to defend themselves (Bradford 94). Squanto sees the higher power as a sign to live life to the fullest. Squanto along with his Indian friends believe in only killing animals if it is needed to survive or if they are going to use up the whole animal remain, because the higher power (God) would be mad at them for killing animals for now good. Every time before Squanto and the Indians eat or need help, they pray to God for thanks or for forgiveness (Bradford 93). Squanto knew that everything was given or there for a reason and he always thanked the great spirit for it. He didn't take anything for granted, he always cherished everything he had as if it would be his last time seeing it, tasting it, or touching it.
