Landscape Architecture - Brookgreen Gardens Tour
Brookgreen Gardens opened seven decades ago to the public. Since that time, it has drawn visitors from all over the world who come to see its enchanting showcase of art and nature. The gardens are set on a 300-acre piece of land on the South Carolina coast that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Waccamaw River.
The founders of Brookgreen Gardens were a philanthropist and his wife, Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. The Huntingtons first visited the property, which was a former rice plantation, in 1929. They were so impressed with the area that they decided to purchase Brookgreen Plantation and its three adjoining properties. The beauty and history of the land inspired them to transform the site into a showcase for American figurative sculpture that would be located within a natural refuge for native plants and animals. They officially opened Brookgreen Gardens in 1931. It was the first sculpture garden ever to exist in the United States and is today considered a National Historic Landmark.
