In the1880s a French company began to construct a canal across the Isthmus of Panama. The purpose of the canal was to provide a fast, easy and safe passage for ships, traveling from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. ... To Theodore Roosevelt who became the president after president McKinley was killed, the idea of a canal uniting the east and the west was really attractive. He was a believer of Mahan’s theory of sea power, he wanted to revitalize and expand the navy and he knew the canal would be a strategic center for the military. ... S military control around the canal. ... at once occupy the Isthmus anyhow, and proceed to dig canal. But I deemed it likely that there would be a revolution in Panama soon. ... And indeed a revolt began, and right away he sent the navy down to Panama to support the new government that later on, accomplished independence. ... The construction of the canal began the following year.
