Lights, Camera, April

Award winning poet and novelist April Bernard gave a free reading last night at Baruch College. Reading from her third collection of poems, Bernard approached the podium in a calm reserved manner. Beginning to read from her 14-line memoir sequence, "The Song of Yes and No", her deep eyes penetrates your soul, as she connects with eye contact from across the room. "The song of Yes and No" remorsefully eulogizes being young, bohemian, and in love in New York's East Village in the 1980's.
Bernard's voice is filled with expression and incredible emphasis as she describes the trials and tribulations growing up as a bohemian artist.
Her poetry is unlike any heard before. "Her poems walk a thin line between grace, elegance and weird savage vindication," said _____________ Dean of Baruch's Weismann School of Arts and Science. Bernard's use of imagery is so profound that it places the reader in the setting of her poetry. Her humor is accurate though at times ironic.
Certain lines of Bernard's poetry jumped out, ringing in my ears for a while...
