The Road Safety Cell was set up in the erstwhile Ministry of Surface Transport in September, 1986. The cell was entrusted with formulation of policies for road safety with a view to minimizing road accidents in the country. The Road Safety Cell compiles road accidents data, prepares and implements Annual Road Safety Plan, draws up National Road Safety Policy and prepares/implements schemes and programmes envisaging Road Safety.
2. Important schemes being implemented by Road Safety Cell include Publicity Programmes, Grants-in-aid to Voluntary Organizations for organizing road safety programmes, National Highway Accident Relief Service Scheme, Refresher Training to Heavy Vehicle Drivers in Unorganized Sector, etc., and setting up of Model Driving Training Schools.
Highlights of activities undertaken during the year 2002-2003 are:
i. Public awareness campaign was carried out in a Electronic/Print Media through Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) viz.
