The meeting commenced its work at 9:00. After introductory remarks by Dr. Finkelstein, the floor was given to Dr. Lu Zhi Ping. Dr. Lu gave an overview of the situation in China especially following the outbreak of SARS. He indicated that in China, equal if not more emphasis was given to the screening of exit (embarking) passengers ¨Cat all the exit points. This applies to the land, sea and air exit points. In view of the possible resurgence of SARS in the coming winter Dr. Lu indicated that it was important that there be no relaxation towards the screening process. Due to the fact that there had been no case of SARS for a fairly long time it was natural for people to take a more relaxed view. That was why, Dr. Lu felt that the Phase II project is timely ¨C it will ensure that contingency plans are in place so that things can quickly be geared up to handle any problems. Dr. Lu then took the delegates through the technical document entitled ˇ°Technical Report on Health Screening and Quarantine. Surveillance of SARS at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airportˇ±. He drew particular attention to the points relevant to air travelers and airports.
