Stepping off that bus, a scent of freshly cut grass tickled my nose. I was overly excited, and the tremendously feeling of awe hit me. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, with the sun shining, the birds chirping, and the light breeze to cool you off. Everything was so green and well maintained. All the gravestones were symmetrical with each other. Some were burly white, while others showed a fading gray color showing signs of age. I couldn’t imagine that where I stood lay over a quarter of a million Americans that risked their lives for a cause so great, a cause we can only fathom. There were many other people here besides my class of Bill of Rights students. There were babies in strollers, kids running around, teens following their guides, adults looking for loved ones, and the elderly strolling, visiting old friends. Even though we might have come for different reasons, ultimately when we leave, we gain an undying respect to these heroes that sacrificed what they were for us. I never imagined Arlington so huge and magnificent. And with so many people about, all I could hear and feel was complete peace and serenity. The birds sang wonderful melodies. The trees were blossoming so beautifully. The flowers were all bright and vivid with colors. Even the sound of the water in a small creek was peaceful with a constant trickle.
