The movie, Dances With Wolves, shows many vivid examples of the barriers and misconceptions between people who appear different from each other. The word 'appear' was used because in reality, from a neutral point of view, the two groups of people were not all that different. They ultimately had the same values and beliefs of fighting for what they believed was right, and retaining their honor. The movie was about a journey of one man into a different civilization and culture, and how he had to overcome countless barriers and misconceptions. The Sioux also learned many lessons in return, such as patience and the fact that not all white men are pure evil. The first, and most common, barrier between the Sioux and the Soldiers is skin color. Before even trying to communicate with each other, they noticed that their skin color was slightly different, so they automatically assumed them to be the enemy. After getting past the physical appearance, a huge obstacle they had to overcome was language. Even though they were not physically threatened by each other, the fact that they could not communicate hindered any negotiations of peace.
