Evolutionary Reasoning Behind Bipolar Disorder
An Insiders Perspective
Some would say that I have bipolar disorder I do not believe this is the case. Bipolar is simply a chemical "imbalance." How different does one's bodily chemical ratios have to be to be considered in imbalance? The problem is realized when significant impairment is caused. (see table 1 for details on DSM IV checklist on mania) After reading that, one may wonder how one with bipolar disorder would be found out, do they want help, do they even know what is wrong, do they care?
From the title it should have become clear to the reader why I chose this topic to write about. Simply stated I myself am a bipolar. Bipolar disorder is both a blessing and a curse. I would say the simplest perhaps most mundane example I could give in relating to the great differences between mania and depression is to say that when I was manic I felt as if I could teach my English class, when I was depressed I could hardly attend and often missed it entirely.
