Infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the primary cause of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), and is an infection that is increasing in women.

HIV is a Ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus. RNA viruses are called retroviruses because they replicate in a backward manner. HIV cannot replicate unless it is inside of a living cell. Once HIV is bound to the cell, the genetic material of the virus enters the cell and becomes a permanent part of the cell's genetic structure. When genetic division occurs, all daughter cells from the infected cell will also be infected. HIV infects T-lymphocytes, CD4+ T-cells, and monocytes. Suppression of cell-mediated immunity places a person at risk for opportunistic infections...
