John Kennedy Toole created an “obese genius” - Ignatius Reilly - in his masterpiece A Confederacy of Dunces. This novel is set in New Orleans during the late 1950’s. While in New Orleans, Ignatius stumbles upon many adventures, which always tend to end up in mishaps. Throughout the whole book, Ignatius gradually reveals the following qualities of himself: melodramatic, laziness, and glutton. Ignatius has a melodramatic feature. When he fell off the stool at Levi Pants, he went as far as saying that he thought he had “a broken back” (100). After saying that, he had everyone worried. Amongst this disturbance, Miss Trixie accidentally stepped on one of Ignatius’ hands. Ignatius accused her of having “crushed” (100) the bones in his hand. Then later in the novel when Ignatius attends a movie at the Orpheum, he begins expressing his emotions and feelings about the movie out load.
