According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, each year nearly 300 people die from meningococcal meningitis. Unfortunately, most of these cases affect children under the age of 5.
What is meningitis? Meningitis is an infection of the fluid surrounding a person's spinal cord and brain. There are two usual causes, either viral or bacterial. Bacterial meningitis is the more severe of the two. The most recent studies find Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitides to be the leading cause of bacterial meningitis (C.D.C).
