In Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club she tells the story of four Chinese mothers and their four American daughters. The mothers all tell their stories of childhood to adulthood, and so do the daughters. Lots of aspects of life are very similar between two countries. In this essay I will link together some of the similarities between Vietnam and China, and relate them to The Joy Luck Club.
The Vietnam war was fought from 1959 - 1979. After the fall of Saigon, a huge amount of refugees fled Vietnam to the United States. People needed to escape the war beaten country to a more stable home. The United States was seen as the place to go, the land of the free. In The Joy Luck Club, Suyuan Woo must flee Kweilin, China because of the invading Japanese during Word War II. In her flight she even left behind her two twin daughters Chwun Yu and Chwun Hwa...
