In the novel, the Scarlet Letter, by Nathanial Hawthorne, actions taken by major characters have a profound effect on themselves, others, and the community. Two characters that obviously show this are Dimmesdale and Hester, whose choice to have a relationship together creates a lasting effect on there lives and the lives of the entire community. ... She was required to where a scarlet letter A on her chest because she committed the crime of adultery. ... She also grew to be a beacon of women’s rights and her scarlet A became more of a symbol of strength than weakness. She chose to continue to wear the letter because she was determined to transform its meaning through her actions.
