Many wars have taken place through United States history and their importance has secured them a place in the history. Although most of the wars tend to be forgotten, the studies of history try to reminds us of them and at the same time shape us into well-informed human beings. The War of 1812 is one of the forgotten wars of the United States. The war lasted for over two years, and while it ended much like it started, in stalemate, it was in fact a war that once and for all confirmed American Independence. To some the war is known as "The Second War for Independence", or the name everyone else uses "The War of 1812" Some of the important parts of the War of 1812 are the causes of the war, the big battles and the effects of the War of 1812 on postwar North America.
The War of 1812 had several causes: British naval actions on the Atlantic and an American desire to seize Britain's North American colonies. Other Americans had different reasons for wanting war. Many thought it was finally time for the US to take possesion of Canada to complete its manifest destiny. Others believed native unrest in the west was funded and encouraged by the British.
