Bartleby the Scrivener by Herman Melville depicts the Lawyer’s unique perspective of his life at work and most importantly of Bartleby and his fellow co-workers. ...
What makes Bartleby the Scrivener such an interesting story is that it is told from the perspective of a man who is diametrically opposed to Bartleby in his values and manners. ... How does the fact that it is common usage to examine your own paper makes it necessary for Bartleby to do so? When faced with his scrivener’s adversity, the Lawyer often asks himself the wrong questions, or makes up the wrong answers which he just assumes must be right: “I look steadfastly at him […] the first few weeks of his stay with me might have impaired his vision”. The Lawyer immediately thinks of a physical breakdown, never asks himself if perhaps it is Bartleby’s soul that is affected.
