Socioculture Essay There are many different views of society led by many different theorists who see society in a different way. This essay will discuss how studying these theories in the socio-culture course has contributed to myself as a teacher. It will concentrate specifically on the theories of Structural Functionalism and the Humanistic theory. Structural Functionalist This approach is one that focuses on society as a whole and believes that society is made up of several parts that link together. After studying this theory, it is evident that many of my lessons feature this type of teaching and it is only after being made aware of this theory that I have been able to identify it throughout my lessons. When explaining how the social system (PE) works, the structural functionalist would focus on how each part of the system contributes to the systems overall operation. Using the PE class as our social system, we would evaluate how each individual child contributes to the class as a whole. The structural functionalist wants everyone to fit into society but may not be able to achieve this if children with SEN were part of the class. This would not encourage the smooth running of the system and the structural functionalist model may therefore be seen as promoting exclusion. It is the therefore the responsibility of the PE teacher to make their teaching as inclusive as possible to help those pupils who are at a disadvantage. The teacher would have to decide on content and pedagogy that was appropriate for every member of the class. In order that the system is successful, it must consider 4 elements: Socialise individuals into cultural values It is up to the PE teacher to plan a programme that fulfils the aims of PE. By planning lessons that encourage Teamwork, Co-operation, communication, social interactions and the development of personal relationships the teacher can produce a pupil who possesses life skills that can be used in society in general. We could even say that these are skills that develop an idea of citizenship (creating a better citizen).
