Human civilization has always differed from those of the animal kingdom because humans have the ability to communicate and to form cultures. A person's culture gives him an identity, and a basis for living. This ethos develops and changes throughout history as technology and lifestyles change. African Americans, living through periods of strong oppression in American history, have always had strong ties to their culture, which they relied on as a pillar of strength. Music has always been an essential part of their culture, developing from African folk music to jazz, reggae, and finally what is modern-day Hip-Hop. For many, Hip-Hop is not only music, but also a way of life. But Hip-Hop music is the soul of Hip-Hop culture, and in its purest form is the ultimate form of expression for many people. Hip-Hop culture has spread across racial boundaries and is embraced as popular culture by different races and all around the world. However, with the growth of Hip-Hop music, most rappers have lost sight of the purpose of it.
