Many families use institutions such as nursing homes to help their loved ones. When a family member places a loved one in a nursing home it is expected to meet the needs of the person and give the family a sense of relief. However, not all nursing homes satisfy their needs, and much of the time there is abuse involved.
It is hard to get a good definition of elder abuse because people have different opinions of the word. Basically, elder abuse is usually defined as the physical or psychological mistreatment of a senior, and can include taking financial advantage or neglecting the care of a senior (page 1 www.calregistry.com).
Many people overlook the fact that there are many different types of elder abuse. Jacki Pritchard, a geriatric social worker, says that there are five main types. They are: physical, financial, emotional, and sexual abuse, also neglect (Pritchard 21)...
