The American Family
Choosing Families was published on November 24, 1988 in the Washington Post. Ellen Goodman, Pulitzer Prize winner, has written many essays and has been a syndicated columnist since 1967. Goodman wrote Choosing Families about Thanksgiving tradition and how it brings a family together. She asks the question "How do we make a family these days?" She says a family is made through the "oral tradition", that food and conversation make a family.
Goodman's sentence structure is simple. There are no complex or confusing sentences. She uses sentence fragments to emphasize points like " How do we make a family these days? With blood? With marriage?..
