BEHAVIOR The behavior that I observed and attempted to change was my sleep habits during the weekdays (Monday – Friday). This behavior, I felt, was causing myself to feel tired and wound out during the day and was causing me to sleep long hours during the day and be up all night. This became a reoccurring pattern that not only was affecting me physically but mentally as well. Initially, to set a base to compare my result with after the project was completed; I observed my sleep patterns for one week and then documented them. This also allowed me to determine how I would measure my amount of time sleeping during the time of observation. The amount of time that I spent sleep was measured every day for an eight-week period starting on September 22, 2003. Everyday I recorded how many hours I spent sleep and what time of the day that it was occurring in. For the eight-week period I did so and compiled the results in Microsoft Excel. During this observation I found out that it would be more beneficial and easier to document if I examined the increase in the average amount of time sleeping a week instead of directly aiming to increase my daily sleep hours. Quickly changing my sleep habits first seemed reasonable but was quickly learned that it would not be quite as easy as I thought. PROJECT OBJECTIVES & WEEKLY RESULTS My objective of increasing my amount of sleep was somewhat reached, but not to the extent that I would have liked. With my initial assessment I had wished to increase my hours of sleeping by 50%, or 9.3 hours a day. Upon further review this drastic increase was not a reasonable objective. Something a little less drastic in such a small period of time that we were allowed would have made it easier to obtain my goal. From the graphs you can see that I increased my average amount of time sleeping but not by the numbers that I had wished. FIRST WEEKS RESULTS Average hours of daily sleep for week 1 = 6.5 hours SECOND WEEKS RESULTS Average hours of daily sleep for week 2 = 6.8 hours THIRD WEEKS RESULTS Average hours of daily sleep for week 3 = 7.5 hours FOURTH WEEKS RESULTS Average hours of daily sleep for week 4 = 7.25 hours FIFTH WEEKS RESULTS Average hours of daily sleep for week 5 = 7.7 hours SIXTH WEEKS RESULTS Average hours of daily sleep for week 6 = 8.25 hours SEVENTH WEEKS RESULTS Average hours of daily sleep for week 7 = 5.9 hours EIGTH WEEKS RESULTS Average hours of daily sleep for week 8 = 7.5 hours CAUSES OF INCOMPLETION OF GOALS Some of the causes for me not completely accomplishing my objectives were the television constantly playing at all times of the night, the lack of communication between my roommate and myself, and my desire for going out and enjoying myself at night and having to wake up early to make it to class on time.
