Why did the United States fight the Vietnam War?
Almost always the United States is the good guy. We fight for what we believe in. Usually that will include something to do with freedom, and the war in Vietnam is no exception. Many Americans knew very little about Vietnam, but they saw the Vietnam War as a battle between communists and non-communists. When the conflict started, we stayed out, as usual, of the combat but supported one country financially. Ironically enough, to start out we were financially supporting the French. The French were soon defeated by the much smaller Vietnamese Communist's army.
At the Geneva Accords, Vietnam was divided into the northern communists and southern anti-communists at the seventeenth parallel. Eisenhower put troops in the south to keep Communism out...
