The film Amistad directed by Steven Spielberg, and The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, written by Olaudah Equiano are two different accounts of the slave trade, but both have a lasting impression on our minds. The film by Steven Spielberg recounts the story of the famous La Amistad. The slaves it was carrying overthrew their captors and forced them to take them back to Africa. Unfortunately they did not make it to Africa and ended up in the United States. The book is a narrative written by an enslaved African named Olaudah Equiano. He was kidnapped a child and brought to the Americas and sold into slavery. He eventually managed to purchase his freedom and became an abolitionist. Both of these works effectively portray the middle passage of the slave trade with vivid details. They make us feel sorry for the Africans and they are portrayed as the "good guys." The cruel and inhumane treatment of the slaves is shown in such a detailed manner in both works, we cannot even begin to imagine what it would be like to be a slave...
