b I have always watched game shows on television such as Jeopardy, Family Feud, and the relatively new show, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and wondered what it felt like to be in the contestant's position. I wondered what it felt like to be under all of that pressure having adrenaline pumping through my body aware of the fact that I only have a limited amount of time to answer a question and to answer it correctly. It must be nerve-wrecking but at the same time exciting because the outcome of the game is depending on me and besides, I was there for a reason; I was there to win. I finally go a chance to experience such and emotion when my coach announced that our African-American History Brain Bowl team had been selected to compete at the state competition in Tampa, Florida. The traditional reward for game shows is usually money, but in my particular case the reward for my game was a full scholarship to any Florida University.
It was my senior year in high school and I had missed out on everything. Attending the senior carnival, senior skip day, senior beach week, and the football games are but few of the sacrifices I made or better yet, I had to make to get our team to state competition. It was the first time in my life that I have ever made such personal sacrifices. I have made sacrifices before but they usually involved me eating all of my green peas so that I could have ice cream after supper.
