Beethoven's Piano Sonata in B-flat Major op.106 "Hammer Klavier"
While I have achieved only a novice level of listening skills in regards to classical music, I felt as though I had a taste of nearly every style of composition one could think of. I now realize my enormous mistake. I was simply blown away by Beethoven's "Hammer Klavier." When I was listening to this massive piece, I could definitely hear the structure. I could tell that motives were being repeated, but it would take a very patient, dedicated listener to decipher Beethoven's complex form and make sense of this piece. I decided to focus on why, after hearing this piece, it was impossible for me to walk away humming the melody. I could not believe the number of new ideas that were constantly thrown in and the extreme syncopation that kept the listener waiting for a simple, memorable melody.
A few questions were posed as guidelines for this paper. The first was why the nickname of Hammerklavier?..
