There Is No Future Among a Present Past

She tries to change her life by running away from slavery, but eventually, her past catches up to her and she feels the pull to go and live in it; to live in her life before she murdered her crawling-already? ... The day he came into her home was the day that her past was reawakened.
Paul D came into Sethe’s life and offered her something no one else ever had: a future. ... With that, Paul D represented a future for Sethe. ... At the time, this further confirms her decision to start a future with Paul D. ... Just as Paul D represents Sethe’s future, Beloved represents her past. ... Even though Sethe does not realize it, this girl is the darkest part of her past. ... He distracted her from her past with the promise of a future. She was blinded by the desire to have life with him and so she did not see that a huge fragment of her past was living there in her own house. ... And although he could not figure out why, perhaps it can be better shown with the same analogy of past and future. Paul D, as a representation of the Sethe’s possible future, could not live with Beloved, who is a dark part of Sethe’s past. He is trying to offer her something to look forward to, but it is impossible to do this when she cannot escape her past.
