Elvis Presley is arguably one of the most popular and well-known entertainers of all time. During his twenty-two year career, he achieved a legendary status that has continued to grow even after his death. It is with this fame and his contribution to the emerging 'rock' music that he is widely referred to as the "King of Rock 'n' Roll". From meek beginnings, Elvis Presley was able to carve for himself a legendary music and film career that instilled him as one of the all time music greats. Elvis had it all, good looks an excellent voice, stage presence and a rebellious, almost dangerous presentation. It is because of these characteristics that Elvis became so popular, and the driving force behind his catapult towards superstardom. This paper will look at the question of whether Elvis Presley truly is the King of Rock 'n' Roll and the opinions surrounding both arguments, for and against. In answering that question it will be argued that Elvis is truly the King of Rock 'n' Roll, not solely based on his musical ability but on the fact that he was able to effectively represent the entire package and turn Rock 'n' Roll into mainstream music.
