Cultural Influence
In the article, Whats the Difference between Boys and Girls? the author, Deborah Blum discusses gender difference. She says that boys are more competitive than girls due to higher testosterone levels. But this testosterone, Deborah argues, can be either increased or decreased as one grows up, depending on the cultural experience that one goes through. Thus, the author concludes, biology contributes a gender difference, but we can influence our kids with guidance in a cultural way.
I understand when the author says biology affects gender difference. It raises the idea that biology is as important as culture to shape ones gender identity. However, I do not see that biology affects our gender difference as hugely as culture does; culture is a far more important factor, influencing our gender difference.
Mass media, especially TV, plays a crucial role in shaping our gender identity. When a little girl watches TV animation in which, many pretty women with beautiful clothes smile each other and look so enjoyable, she would be infatuated by them and start to want to be like them...
