‘A Dolls House’- · The writing of A Dolls House was influenced by some of the dominant, philosophical and aesthetical ideas of Ibsen’s day. These ideas themselves are a product of the way people thought historically, socially and culturally. Ibsen would not have written this play in our day in age because the context is different. · One of the key ideas is the theory of naturalism. · Naturalism is the belief that we are the outcome of hereditary and environmental factors. Our environment is the society that we live in, for example; the people we live with effect the way we act and feel. Hereditary factors are those given to us genetically by our parents. Our behaviour especially in a crisis situation is governed by these factors. · This was not a new Idea of Ibsen’s. He was well aware of earlier proponents; Emile Zola, Larmarck and Darwin. For instance. · There is evidence of this theory in the play where Torvald said to Nora “Oh Nora, Nora, how like a woman! No, but seriously, Nora, you know how I feel about this. No debts! Never borrow!….” (p25) also Torvald tells Nora “Well I suppose I must take you as you are. It’s in your blood. Yes, yes, yes, these things are hereditary Nora.” (p26) · Ibsen had other beliefs that were contrary to naturalism. · If you believe in naturalism to its full extent then this is determinism · Ibsen could have never accepted determinism because Ibsen believes in the primacy of free will.
