Maltreatment in North America
It is hard to imagine how a parent can physically hurt or abuse their child, yet it does happen and often more than people may think. The two most common forms of child abuse are physical and sexual abuse. Another common form of maltreatment is neglect. This occurs when a child does not receive adequate food, clothing or medical attention. One aspect of abuse that people look past many times is the psychological aspect of abuse, such as ridicule, rejection and humiliation. Many times emotional wounds lasts longer than physical wounds (Kail 2001).
According to the National Center on Child Abuse, about one million children are abused in the United States every year. Children who are abused are forever scared by this, and most of the time the child has no choice but to live with it. The age of the abused child usually determines how the child is abused, and sometimes who is abusing them, mother or father.
