A good professional engineer is one who has integrity. Integrity involves having a strong background in ethics. As an electrical engineer, there is going to be several situations that will involve ethical or moral concerns. As a good engineer I need to handle this situations the best way possible not violating my professional integrity. Two of my biggest ethical or moral concerns are: whether or not to report a problem to someone higher than my supervisor in the chain of command, and whether or not support a colleague in a situation in which I may lose my job.
As I watched the Gilbane Gold video in class and noticed how the environmental engineer went about to report to the plant manager after reporting to his supervisor and not getting him to realize the size of the problem, I realized that there is not a clear right or wrong answer in the actions taking in this kind of situation. To deal with this situation, my first concern needs to be keeping my professional integrity. I need to explore every single possibility and their outcomes. Tell the truth, but go about it the right way. First step would be to hand something written that would specifically state the problem and its consequences to my supervisor...
