Annie Dillard
Meta Ann Doak was born on April 30, 1945 in Pittsburg, PA to a rich family who submersed her in an atmosphere full of country clubs and private schools. Her family raised her to make her own decisions and to think for herself. This ended up to be a very successful way for her parents to raise her because it led her to be a free thinking writer of whose work has been widely read. She has become widely known as a writer of non-fiction, and her name has become widely known. Of course, the name she goes by now is her married name, Annie Dillard (CITE). Annie Dillard's works are an expression of her beliefs and interests, and through them, she prompts reflection and meditation in her readers. Her work stems from her life while she was growing up and the changes she experienced in her lifetime.
As a child, Annie Dillard was sent to the Ellis School, which is a private school for girls. During this time, she was surrounded by the effects of war on the people of the United States and the writings that pertained to disaster and war (Smith 5).
