Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was born in New York City in 1858. His personality is that of bravery, courage, and most of all, compassion. He was a war hero, renowned conservationist, and one of the greatest American politicians of all time. Without Theodore Roosevelt the nation might look and feel completely different.
Teddy Roosevelt was first recognized nationally for his part in the Spanish-American War. Before the war he was Assistant Secretary of the Navy, but once fighting broke out he became eager to join in. He had already served in the National Guard for three years and gained the rank of captain. So he joined up with General Leonard Wood in May 1898 after resigning from his Navy post. General Wood promoted him to lieutenant colonel and from there he recruited cowboys and other acquaintances to join the fight and he and his companions became known as the Rough Riders.
