Carolingian Europe refers to Charlemagne, crowned Holy Roman Emperor in the year 800, he became the sole ruler of the Christian world in 771. He sparked the famed Carolingian Renaissance, or the improved interest in literacy and culture in the late 8th and 9th centuries. This renaissance, introduced no new ideas into medieval Europe, it merely preserved classical culture. Its greatest accomplishment was the equality of script and of the education of monks. Beginning in the late 7th century, Charlemagne invited scholars from all over the Christian world to his court in Aachen. He established schools in the palace and enacted written legislation requiring scriptoriums in all monasteries (Enos 101). He also ordered the correction and recopying of error filled manuscripts. The famous scholar Alcuin from Northumbria was at the court from 782-796 and helped in these accomplishments. He is credited with the development of the Carolingian minuscule script, a new way to write the Latin alphabet.
