God's Constant Offer of "Rest" For His People
The fall of man in the Garden of Eden brought the separation of sin between God and his people. Fortunately for God's people, He has offered "rest" and numerous chances at restoring their relationship with Him. The topic of "rest", or peace is frequently spoken of in the book of Hebrews. This was directly related to the present audience of Hebrews and also to the Israelites of the past. The author of Hebrews warns his audience to not fall into the same trap that their predecessors had, and to choose the proper path when making their decision to live in or without faith in God. What needs to be established is the definition of "rest" and what it means to those who find, or do not find rest.
The author of Hebrews references the word "rest" eleven times between chapters three and four. (3:11, 18, 4:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11). So what did our author mean when he penned "rest"? The word "rest" is defined by Webster's dictionary as repose, place of rest, remainder...
