St. Petersburg is a city often described by those who wrote about it, as a city where the supernatural is a normal occurrence, affecting both rich and poor alike. This theme is shared by many of the Russia's most famous authors and poets, like Pushkin and Nikolai Gogol. Pushkin's the "Bronze Horseman"' depicts St. Petersburg as a place of awesome power, from its mythical creation to its influence on common man. In Pushkin's writing St. Petersburg, and its creator Peter the Great take on a godlike role in the lives of its citizens. The city is depicted as both brilliant as well as dangerous, giving hope and quickly taking it away, this two faced role takes a deciding part in the fate of a poor young couple. Pushkin also captures the realities of life beyond the faade of the City, which shows the life of someone not included in the new hierarchy of Russian culture and society.
