Sadao Watanabe, born in 1913 in Tokyo and lived until 1996, was on of the best know artist to use a method called kappazuri or stencil painting a technique is related to katazome or stencil dyeing. Watanabe-san produced his works using traditional Japanese techniques in the style of old Buddhist figure prints. What was unusual about Watanabe-san and his work was the subject he used. Watanabe-san, who had become a Christian in 1930, only depict Christian stories and figures in his work. The subject mater he uses was something that was relative foreign in his home of Japan made him a very unique artist. His work The Third Trumpet that he produced in 1974 is an example of his combination of two different worlds. (http://www.allinsongallery.com/)
