Brahms's was a man who was a perfectionist and would only allow his work to be heard in public if he thought it was in the best form possible. So when one of his favorite works, the single work that he thought represented the most perfect concerto that he could have developed, was criticized and torn apart, he was devastated. From that point on it would take him years to develop any type of work that he would find acceptable to be heard by anyone but him. He would use his most trusted friends to preview his works and would not even let them see the work until it was up to his standards. Throughout his life Brahms's was given many awards and honors by various countries and organizations, but nothing was ever good enough for him or for his critics because for decades he was and still is compared to Beethoven, another musician/ composer, of Brahms's time. I will start my part of Brahms's biography at the summit of his career, starting in November 1872.
Brahms's know for being a great composer conducted his first program in Vienna directing the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. (1) Brahms's managed to hold this position for three years until in 1875. While conducting this orchestra, Brahms's was composing as well. His main focus was on two specific genres, the string quartet and the symphony, both of which dominated by Beethoven...
