How would it feel living in a time where everything about you was seen through the color of your skin? How would it feel if the darkness of your skin was not acceptable? How would it feel if all your hopes and dreams were unable to come true because of assumptions made due to your race? How would this affect you emotionally? With this in mind, Maya Angelou has expressed her feelings while having gone through this many times. In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, a very popular autobiographical novel, Angelou portrays herself as a young, African-American girl with dreams that were restricted because of her race. She overcomes this time period of such restriction with determination and thirst for knowledge while adapting to two different environments.
