CHARGE syndrome is a disease that occurs in approximately one of every ten to twelve thousand births and in both male and female. It is not well known. CHARGE is an acronym for defects that may be found; C-coloboma of the eye, H-heart defects, A-atresia of the choanae, R-retardation and development and/or CNS anomalies, G-genital and urinary difficulties, and E-ear abnormalities and hearing loss.
There are several birth defects that have been related to this disease. A coloboma is a cleft or failure to close the eye. It may also affect the retina or optic nerve causing vision loss. Visual activity may also be affected, resulting in nearsightedness or farsightedness. About 40% of children with CHARGE have facial palsy and at least 30% have swallowing problems. Around 80% of children are born with a heart defect, usually being minor but may require surgery. Some, though, can be life threatening...
