A Farewell To Arms
Introduction
I wrote my paper on the book, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway. It is a
story mostly about the World War and how it affects the emotions of the people involved,
and how the main character tries to remove himself, and leave it behind. The story offers
wonderful descriptions of the war and the surrounding setting. Hemmingway is trying to
explain that war is nothing more than the dark side of the world that refuses to
acknowledge and protect true love.
Descriptive Background Information
The main characters in this novel are Lieutenant Fredric Henry and Catherine
Barkly who are both helping soldiers during World War I. Henry is a young ambulance
driver serving in the Italian Army, during the winter he arranges for a tour of Italy, and it
is there that he meets Catherine. Catherine is a nurse's aide, who is trying to get over the
death of her finance'. At first, their relationship is just for connivance on both sides.
Henry wants a night of passion to forget the war. Catherine wants to distance herself
from her loss...
