To be (insane) or not to be, THAT is the question. Ok, so maybe that was uncalled for but really, what's a Hamlet essay without a good "to be" reference. All joking aside, William Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, offers a glimpse into the life of a prince who seems to take a downward spiral into insanity. The lazy reader can be inclined to take this at face value. A dedicated scholar, while perhaps not coming to a different conclusion, is not afforded this luxury. Though Hamlet may come across as crazy, It can be argued that his sanity lies in this very ability to feign insanity. When the character is examined through the lens of the true marks of sanity (i.e. being able to use reason and the ability to discern between right and wrong) the reader should at least be faced with the possibility of a clear thinking, sane man in Hamlet.
As mentioned before, the surface answer to the question of Hamlet's sanity is that of course, he has lost it...
