A definition for "black politics" for me, would definitely be summarized by the Civil Rights Movement. I believe the Civil Rights Movement encompasses every aspect of black political culture from its beginnings of peaceful non-violent protest to the violence later associated with the militant groups of Muslims and the Black Panthers. It was a roller coaster ride of black political force that has yet to be duplicated and is definitely the "founding father" of the black political system that this country has today.
The Civil Rights Movement spanned many years and literally wrote the book on the American publics' image of African Americans in this society. It created turmoil in what was thought by some [mainly whites] to be a peaceful country and helped to shape the lives of many Americans regardless of their skin color. Almost every major African American political figure known and respected in this country today, came to power during and took part in the Civil Rights Movement. Before it occurred any person would be hard put to name five African American political figures that had the impact on the prevailing white culture that the leaders during the Movement had. The different phases of the Movement showed how far people were willing to go to try and create an equal society and give everyone the same privileges. I do not believe we would have the same feeling towards what are country stands for today if it were not for the Civil Rights Movement and there definitely would not be a Colin Powell, Jesse James, or a Condelisa Rice so far "up" the political chain that our country is run on.
I chose the Civil Rights Movement as my definition of black politics because I believe it contained many different aspects of a black political system...
