In all the times that I have had to work with others in a team, I never thought that the number of people made such great impact on the overall performance of the team. I have always walked into a team, with my assignment and doing my part, but if someone did not do their portion of the assignment, it always was resolved with negative attitudes. With Tools for Teams, we are learning how to resolve these types of conflict.
What do we call such behavior when a team is not functioning because of the team size or team members who are not carrying their weight? The correct vocabulary is no longer lazy; it is called "social loafing". In the text, Tools for Teams, Thompson, Aranda, and Robbins says, "Social loafing is the tendency of group members to do less than they are capable of as individuals" (2000, p.40). The outcome of what the team has put together should be the result of what was put into the assignment individually. When work is distributed to each team member it is the team's responsibility to hold each other accountable for pulling their own weight.
